The difficulties in the movie include a debate that is ongoing, whether to keep manning the cockpits of fighter jets with officers or to replace them with advanced computer software.
The film also gave a special nod to the Marine Corps. “When they first started Top Gun, they had no idea how good their product was,” said retired Marine Col. Joe Coples, who was executive officer at the Naval Air Station Miramar when Top Gun was filmed there in 1986 and 1987. “There wasn’t a recruitment office at Miramar, so all we did was drug busts and take care of Marines. The idea of competition was a popular theme in the movie as well. The opening scene included two fighter jets speeding through the clouds with one going ahead of the other. Their speed and altitude were crucial components in who would win. The music and camera angles were also important elements to help along with the drama of what was happening on screen during any given scene.

Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?

The antagonists in the movie are the Russians with their MiGs, or Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau aircraft. In the mid-1980s, they were considered the Bogeyman in U.S. military doctrine because of the Soviets’ success against U.S. forces in Vietnam and Middle East. Top Gun attempted to illustrate how the Navy was going to prepare its fliers for likely future confrontations with this enemy through real dog fighting tactics and flight training tactics used by today’s Top Guns that are taking place at Miramar and Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, Va., and at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Fla.
