Mississippi Masala: Plot Twist, Suspense, Action and everything you need to know.

Mississippi Masala tells the story of Mina, an Indian girl that falls in love with a young black man and struggles to find acceptance among their families. Not your average love story, this film is set against the backdrop of racial tension in America during the seventies.

What is the plot of the story ?

In Mississippi Masala, Denzel Washington plays Demetrius who lives across from a small apartment building where Mina lives with her mother and grandmother. Demetrius works as a carpet cleaner for Mrs. Girma (Carrie Coon) who owns several other businesses including a bakery and grocery store on the property of her home. Because it is so profitable for Mrs.

Who is in the cast ? What role did each character portray ?

The cast include Mira Nair , Denzel Washington , Sarita Choudhury , Carrie Coon , Cliff Curtis, David Oyelowo, John Ortiz and others. The cast all play Americans of Indian heritage in the film, including Denzel Washington’s character who has grown up in Mississippi. The plot is based on a true story, which was previously recorded as a book.

What are the difficulties they faced ?

Like most fiction films, it is challenging to portray real life events. For an Indian family, what was especially difficult to depict was the idea of them having to leave their home in Uganda and find a new home in America. A new challenge for this film was the idea of depicting racial tension that existed at the time. The themes of the film include racism, culture and love. Mina’s family does not want her to marry Demetrius because he is black and their families are from two different cultures. Racism causes this conflict to occur.

Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?

The antagonist in this film is racism. Racism was a huge part of the seventies, especially in the south. Demetrius and Mina’s families have trouble accepting their relationship because they are different races. Mina is Indian and Demetrius is African-American. The film made it known that love is universal, it transcends race and religion. Even though they were of different races, no hate was shown during the film and that was what helped them overcome these problems. Although their circumstances were difficult to portray, Mina’s parents and Demetrius’s mother did not stand in their way, but rather let them be together and wished them well.

They were able to get away from him because he was not wearing pants.

Who is the most loved character ?

Mina is the most loved character because she is an innocent but brave girl that loves her family and a man of color. Although she was unable to see her mother and grandmother again, the family still loves her. Even though Demetrius is black, Mina’s father and grandparents love him as they do their daughter. Her mother is shown being very upset when Demetrius asks if he can marry Mina, however, it was a moment where she stood up for him.
