Star Trek Prodigy Plot and Animation Details:

In 2383, following the events of Star Trek: Voyager, a ragtag group of young aliens discover an abandoned Starfleet vessel, the USS Protostar. They must learn to work together as they make their way towards the Alpha Quadrant, taking control of the ship.

The project’s creator and executive producer, Kurtzman, had intended for the series’ animation work to be completed in approximately a year. In May 2019, the writer said that whereas the first animated Star Trek series was “brutal and dark,” this series would be nothing like it. It will also differ from Lower Decks in many ways.

According to him, unlike previous animated Star Trek series, this one would use computer-generated animation and try for a more cinematic feel than the previous series Love, Death & Robots in terms of “beauty and lighting and cinema.” Kadin contrasted the design to previous Hageman designs for Ninjago and Trollhunters.

In an interview with TV Guide in August 2020, Kurtzman claimed that the series’ animation was “barreling ahead, full steam ahead” compared to the live-action Star Trek version, which had been delayed by the COVID-19 epidemic. In February 2021, Kurtzman stated that the series would have film-quality animation that will play in theaters.

The USS Protostar, the series’ debut ship, is strikingly similar to the USS Voyager. The Protostar is shown through a variety of spatial anomalies, planets, and trash fields that coalesce into pictures of the main cast in the series’ opening title sequence.
