Where the women are the only people around, they’re able to skate together- and their creative director uses that opportunity by filming an empty city with just these characters rolling through it.

On the other hand, life during Covid makes it more challenging for each member of the group to find what she’s looking for — especially since so much that these skaters care about is controlled by men.

Season two of BETTY depicts a messy reality, and that’s what its documentarian Moselle has always been able to capture. Sometimes it seems like the women are only chasing goals: Indigo is trying to pay off her debt to her mother; Janay can’t find another place for them to skate outside; Camille wants more respect from people in the skating community by doing social media content for an apparel company.

Meanwhile, much of the series is in the form of vignettes in which we spend time with Kirt, who unexpectedly becomes a guru to the male friends’ playfully rebellious id. We also see Honeybear struggling to understand why her girlfriend wants to bring a third person into their relationship.

As a reality show with nuanced characters in the midst of an unfair and rigged system, most of Season 2 focuses on how living through these experiences affects not only the characters but audiences as well.

Betty continues to be equal parts comedy and drama, with Kirt as the comedic victim of her well-intentioned but misguided lessons on gender norms. In one storyline, Indigo tries to become a “sugar baby,” or woman who spends time with rich men in an unspoken financial arrangement.

And Janay’s quest to find an indoor skate space is mostly played for New York-specific humor, yet has a lovely payoff that also turns into a hat-tip at Skate Kitchen.

For the most part, the predicaments Covert Affairs deals with remain on a fairly low level. Yet when one of their coworkers is killed in an explosion just as they’re all leaving for happy hour, it creates an emotional moment that surprises the viewer and Kirt. “I’m just a person who has emotions,” he tells Joan afterward, “That makes me feel so damn much.”

Camille, the member of the group who most cares about skating for its own sake, says that she’s tired of feeling like she has to prove herself.
