Ghostbusters Afterlife: Trailer, Release Date Updates, Casting Details, Plotline and Rumoured Spin-Offs!

I’m not afraid of a ghost! Ghostbusters fans, rejoice: the third movie in the franchise has a title and release date. The third instalment will be called Ghostbusters Afterlife, and it’s set to premiere in June 2021. To go with this release date announcement, we’ve got some updates about casting, plotline details as well as rumours about potential spin-offs!

Ghostbusters Afterlife Release Date:

The Ghostbusters Afterlife release date has moved around more times than Slimer haunting a buffet. Originally set for July 2020, the release date was then moved to June 11, 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Currently, it’s slated for a November 11, 2021 release.

Or at least that’s the date we’ve heard officially. The clips and trailers tell a different story.

The Casting Details for Ghostbusters Afterlife:

There have been a lot of Ghostbusters casting opportunities in the last year, with many actors being revealed and then taking themselves out of contention for various reasons. The latest updates include:

The Ghostbusters Afterlife cast includes Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver. The new Ghostbusters are being played by the hilarious Kristen Wiig from Saturday Night Live and Bridesmaids as well as Melissa McCarthy of Mike & Molly fame–both known for their comedic timing in sketch comedy and live performances on television, respectively. Kate McKinnon is a current regular performer on SNL also who has been with them since 2012. Leslie Jones rounds out the team with her impressive resume, including numerous stand-up appearances at clubs across New York City like Caroline’s Comedy Club, to name just one example.

The Plotline Details Now Revealed:

In Ghostbusters Afterlife, five years; after he died, from complications, during his birth, Kevin Condry; wakes up confused and embalmed, alive inside his mother’s womb. He isn’t quite sure; what happened or how; it all went wrong, but he soon realises; that the world; has gone to hell; in a handbasket and sets out on a journey; of self-discovery.

The Rumoured Spin-Offs:

A Ghostbusters Afterlife TV Series – The show would follow Mr. Condry while exploring how the afterlife is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Ghostbusters West Coast – A spin-off set in California following four new members from Beverly Hills who are called into action by their friends back east when there’s an emergency close to home. This version will have more comedy than scares which may appeal to those viewers who want something lighter after watching so many intense paranormal movies and shows!

Ghostbusters UK Branch – It’s been reported that this spin-off will be set in London and follow a new group of Ghostbusters who solve paranormal crimes. This branch will also have its own ghosts with “new looks, dialogues, powers, and origins.”

Ghostbusters Academy – The academy would train newcomers how to catch the undead while teaching them about the history of ghost hunting.

Latest Updates:

Another rumour has been making rounds about an animated series being created by Sony Pictures Animation for Disney+. There have been no confirmations yet, but we’ll update you when we know more!

There have also been reports of a Ghostbusters spinoff. The film would focus on the female sidekicks and their adventures, with Kate McKinnon’s Jillian Holtzmann as one of the leads. There was also talk that Andy Garcia could star in another spin-off about Winston Zeddemore (played by Ernie Hudson). Let us know which idea excites you more!

Is Ghostbusters Afterlife worth watching?

That’s for you to decide! The trailer doesn’t give much away, but it does show glimpses of the Ghostbusters fighting off ghosts. We’ll just have to wait until 11th July 2021 when it is released in theatres; then we can be the judge. But trust us, there will be plenty of people lining up outside movie theatres on opening night and maybe even a few tears from longtime fans who are eager to see their favourite ghost-hunting heroes back at work again!

Ghostbusters Afterlife trailers:

First, there was Baby Groot. Then there was Baby Yoda. Now, we have Mini-Pufts to deliver a mix of adorable and dangerous manic energy. In this clip, Mr. Grooberson discovers something’s not right with his local grocery store’s bag of marshmallows.

Storyline:

In Ghostbusters Afterlife, our heroes are still living life after their first group disbanded. When an ancient evil returns with plans to take over New York City once again (and this time not just by crossing bodies), they’ll have to work together as ghosts if they want any chance at saving humanity from destruction. The Ghostbusters are back, and this time, they’re taking on the supernatural. The original team, along with some new blood for their profession, has to investigate a series of disturbances around Manhattan that seem to be related not just to ghosts but also otherworldly creatures such as demons.
