The show follows; the events of various; Chinese dynasties, with each season; focusing on one ruler and their powerful Dynasty Warrior; family members. The show will be set in 190 CE and follow a selection of characters looking for power during; the end of China’s Han Dynasty.

What does this story have to do with Chinese History?

This Netflix movie is based on events that took place from 190-280 CE ̶ right before Emperor Cao Pi proclaimed himself First Emperor and established China’s Jin dynasty. This era was characterized by civil wars between different factions vying for control over what would become known as “China.” Many experts claim it was also one big-time warp! But we’re not just talking about a time warp.

The Jin Dynasty was the first dynasty to unify all of China, which it did in 280. The Jin era is considered by many as one of the most prosperous periods in Chinese history and led to an economic boom that lasted for centuries! Two significant inventions also came out during this period: gunpowder and movable type printing (which then led to books being mass-produced). This period was also known for its advancements in art, literature, music, science, and technology.

The epic live-action movie “Dynasty Warriors” was first announced to be coming out on Netflix in 2021. It is not the only one of its kind; plenty of other adaptations have been done before it. For example, Disney has a series called “Empires.” HBO also had an adaptation with 47 episodes that aired back in 2006, which they rebranded as “Warriors” for international release.

What is the Romance of the Three Kingdoms?

Written by 14th-century writer Luo Guanzhong, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is highly regarded as one of the greatest bodies of work from China and is one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature.

Luo Guanzhong based the novel on the historical text, Records of the Three Kingdoms, but highly romanticises the era, revelling in the myths and legends of the period.

The novel takes place between the collapse of the Han Dynasty and the end of the Three Kingdoms period.

What is the star cast of the movie?

The Netflix Dynasty Warriors movie, like many of the anime adaptations that have come before it, is set to star an entirely Japanese cast. This includes:

Takuya Kimura as Zhao Yun;

Hiroshi Abe as Xu Zhu; and

Masami Nagasawa as Diao Chan.

Furthermore, Kōji Seto will be reprising his role from Samurai Troopers (another series by Toei Animation) for a cameo appearance in one episode, with Nobuo Tanaka also appearing in said episode. There are no announcements yet on who will be voicing Guan Yu or Lu Bu, but rumours indicate they may very well be Cary Elwes and Patrick Seitz, respectively.

Is “Dynasty Warriors” worth binge-watching?

The Netflix Dynasty Warriors movie is worth binge-watching if you’re in the mood for a samurai-based action series. It may not be as good as Samurai Troopers and Shin Chan, but it does have its moments of brilliance that will resonate with any fan of the genre. In particular, Zhao Yun’s rise to power from being just another warrior among many was well executed: his personal journey through life made him into one of the more interesting characters on display here. On top of this, some really exciting battle sequences had no right feeling anything less than epic given how much history they draw upon in their making.
