In his latest film, “Malignant,” director James Wan draws on Italian Giallo movies and leans into the gore to tell a story of a woman haunted by visions of a killer. The specific details about the film are below: it will be available in theaters and on HBO Max.

Malignant Release Date Details:

Malignant is set to be released theatrically in the United States on September 10, 2021, by Warner Bros. Pictures under the New Line Cinema banner.

The film had initially been scheduled for release on August 14, 2020, but the outbreak of COVID-19 forced its cancellation from the original schedule in March 2020.

As part of its plans for all of its 2021 films, Warner Bros. will also stream Malignant on the HBO Max service for a period of one month and then remove it from the service until the normal home media release schedule begins again.

Wan said he drew on Giallo films and Brian De Palma’s work, calling Malignant “a little bit of my homage to Argento’s Opera and Terror at the Opera.” He calls it a “more violent and visceral thriller,” drawing comparisons to Raising Cain, Dressed to Kill.
