Plot

Four decades after the events of the first movie, “The Exorcist” (2023) picks up with Chris MacNeil is still troubled by the memories of her daughter’s possession and exorcism. She now makes sporadic appearances with Dr. Gene Tuskin, played by Hildur Gunadóttir, her daughter’s former psychiatrist, at her isolated home in a rural area of New York. Tuskin is intrigued by Chris’s assertion that she has been experiencing strange occurrences and hearing strange voices in the house, and he offers that they look into the paranormal activity scientifically.

Burke Dennings, a young kid played by Ty Simpkins, is the focus of a demonic force that presents itself through a well-known computer game. Henry Rance, the boy’s father, tries to shield his son from the bad influence but understands he needs assistance from a higher force. He consults Father Marcus Keane, portrayed by Ben Daniels, a contentious priest who was banished from the Church for using unconventional exorcism techniques. Keane agrees to help Rance and Dennings but cautions them that the demon they are fighting is not just any demon—it is the same monster that once controlled Reagan MacNeil.

While working together to fight the demon, Keane and Rance come to realize that they share a common enemy in Captain Howdy, an infamous hacker who uses his abilities to sow discord and corruption throughout the planet. Daveed Diggs portrays Howdy, who is later shown to be possessed by the demon and gives a spooky performance that makes the audience feel both sympathetic and terrified. Burke Dennings’ demon must be exorcized, but Keane and Rance must also face the demon’s power source and the greatest threat to their humanity and faith.
