In 2001, the body of novelist Michael Peterson’s wife was found at their home. She had died from beaten with a weapon .  And he became suspect in what would become known as murder investigation but no charges were filed because there wasn’t enough evidence to arrest him or rule out suicide-which seems like much more likely option when you think about how angry people get after losing loved ones! A Netflix documentary series called “The Staircase” was released, which followed the trial. The documentary is so fascinating because it doesn’t just focus on the case itself-it humanizes everyone involved.

The Staircase is a true crime documentary series that follows the murder trial of American novelist Michael Peterson. Peterson’s wife was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their home .  And Peterson became the prime suspect in what would become known as one of America’s most infamous murder investigations. Despite there being insufficient evidence to charge him with murder  . Peterson was ultimately convicted of manslaughter in 2017 and is currently serving a prison sentence.

The series does an excellent job of providing context for the case and delving into the evidence and arguments presented by both sides. The climax of the documentary is the verdict of the trial .  Which finds Peterson guilty of murder. The series ends with interviews from both Peterson and his lawyer . As they reflect on the case and their thoughts on the outcome.

The series does an excellent job of exploring the dynamics of the Peterson family and how the events of Kathleen’s death affected them all.
