Y The Last Man Plot Synopsis:

Y: The Last Man is a story about people who inherited the Earth after all other mammals. Even most male humans (living beings with a Y chromosome) were killed in an apocalyptical event. Only one man named  Yorick Brown and his pet monkey named Ampersand survived.

The show is about Yorick, the last man on Earth, exploring the new world and struggling to help rebuild society as its survivors cope with their loss. His mom, the U.S. president, is one of these people too; she leads the other survivors to restore society together.
