Dear White People Season 4: Trailer, Official Announcements, Cast, Plot Details
The Netflix comedy Dear White People began life as creator Justin Simien’s 2014 indie film of the same name and has achieved popularity in its own right as an episodic adaptation. The satirical series, which, like the movie, follows a group of vocal Black students speaking out against racism at predominantly white, prestigious Winchester University, was officially renewed for a fourth and final season following the release of Season 3 back in August 2019. What will Winchester’s outspoken Sam, Lionel, and their friends be up to this time, and how will Dear White People end? Here’s everything we’ve turned up about Season 4 so far.
About the Show
– Dear White People is a satirical comedy series that follows the lives of four Black students at an Ivy League college where racial tensions are high.
– Season one explores how being black while white dominates and shapes their realities, relationships, and experiences on campus.
– Created by Justin Simien (writer/director), with Logan Browning as lead protagonist Sam White, Dear White People is a timely and universal story about being young and black in America.
Release date For Dear White People Season 4
Dear White People is one of the many shows that unfortunately have to navigate filming during the pandemic. While the show resumed filming in fall 2020, it’s since had to shut down production multiple times—first due to positive COVID cases onset in mid-November, and then due to the surge of cases in LA in early 2021. There’s no indication that the series hasn’t since resumed filming following their pause in January, so it seems likely that they’ll continue through the spring. The final season is definitely confirmed to hit Netflix in 2021, so when considering that timeline, late summer or fall seems like when we’ll be heading back to Winchester.
Cast
Season Four Dear White People Season four of the series is confirmed to have a new cast with sixteen characters.
The trailer for season four was released on January 17, 2018, and features Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” in its background score. The video opens up with an aerial view of Winchester University before moving inside, where we see the new cast members, including Joelle Brooks as Nash, Adrian, and Lionel’s daughter.
The video then moves to a protest scene with more of the show’s original cast present while we hear dialogue from Reggie: “No matter what they say about us, no one can take away our sense of self.”
Spoiler Alert!
The final season will explore the question of “What happens to a Black life after it’s been declared that it mattered?”
Is this season the last season for “Dear White People?”
Once Dear White People wraps up its fourth season, it will officially be done. It might not be the last we’ll see of Winchester, though. Simien told Deadline that, although he’d be handing off the concept for somebody else to take on, he “would absolutely love the idea of spin-offs” to continue to take place at the school, follow some of the characters we’re already familiar with, and spark new conversations.
