Disney’s The Little Mermaid is one of the most iconic animated films in history. So you can imagine how excited we are to hear about a live-action remake! Let us tell you what we know so far and offer some thoughts on what this movie might be like!

As mentioned above, Disney has not yet released any plot details for The Little Mermaid live-action film. In fact, they have barely revealed anything at all about it other than that it will exist! But there are still many things we can guess from listening to rumours and news reports.

Release Date for The Little Mermaid Live-Action Remake:

Even before the delayed start to filming, The Little Mermaid didn’t have a confirmed release date, and it still doesn’t have one as of April 2021.

If we do some digging into future planned Disney releases, there are upcoming slots for ‘Untitled Disney Live Action’ movie releases on December 17, 2021, April 8, 2022, May 27, 2022, August 12, 2022, and November 4, 2022.

The December 2021 release feels too soon with the movie just starting filming, but any of those 2022 dates are possible. It’s all dependent on future Disney releases, as the calendar is constantly changing, so we don’t exactly know when The Little Mermaid will be released for now.

The Little Mermaid Live-Action Cast:

Disney announced that Meryl Streep would be playing Ursula in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.  This is one casting announcement that many fans were excited to see happen, and it looks like they did not disappoint.

Streep will take on the role as the Sea Witch who “offers young mermaid Ariel eternal life for her voice.” The trailer also introduces us to new cast members such as Awkwafina (as a sea goddess), Helena Bonham Carter (as Vanessa), and Dominic West (King Triton).

The Storyline for the movie remake:

In The Little Mermaid, “Ariel is a mermaid princess who yearns to be part of the human world.  To escape her undersea life with her father King Triton, she seeks help from Ursula, an evil sea witch.”

This movie follows; closely along; with the same storyline, as in Disney’s original animated film, from 1989, and yet it also includes; some new elements; that have never been seen before, on-screen or at all.

Ariel wants to be human, so she makes a deal with Ursula. The price; is her voice and, in return, gets legs; on land for three days; until the sun sets; on day’s end. During those three days, Ariel must find true love; or risk being undersea forever, as a mermaid – never able to experience; what it would feel like to walk among humans again.  She sings “Part of Your World,” which brings Eric (her love interest) out from hiding after he hears her beautiful song sung by Vanessa Williams’ character in the movie trailer that was released last week during Disney’s D23 Expo! Fans were first introduced to this live-action remake when they watched 1989s animated classic at home and now we get a Live-Action remake at your local movie theatre this November.

How does this compare to the original animated version?

The remake will stay true to the story of Ariel and her friends, but some updates make it feel more modernized. The visuals for Ursula’s lair have changed from an octopus-shaped throne room in Disney’s 1989 film to a volcano with waterfalls, fire pits and bridges. And while King Triton has always been strict about not allowing mermaids on land until they turn 18 years old, he now says “halfway through their lives.” We also get new songs like “Powerful” and “Sheer Heart Attack”.

How long of The Little Mermaid will we see in theatres?

You’ll have to wait and find out when you watch the film yourself…but it should last around two hours or so from start to finish. It has been confirmed that no new scenes were added during production – meaning there are not an extended cut available, sorry folks!
