When was The Witcher Blood released?

Netflix’s The Witcher series was announced in May 2017 (via Eurogamer ), began filming in October 2018 (via Deadline ), and was released in December 2019. If the prequel follows the same basic timeline, then we’re expecting The Witcher: Blood Origin to premiere sometime in late 2022 or early 2023.

The official summary of the limited series is as follows: “Set in an elven world 1,200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time—the origin of the very first Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal ‘conjunction of the spheres,’ when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.”The world of The Witcher, set on a landmass known as “the Continent,” used to be separated into a few distinct realms, or parallel universes, home to many different sentient races. During the Conjunction of the Spheres, the worlds were all mashed together into one, bringing elves and monsters and magic into the world of humanity. The very first Witcher was created (as Geralt of Rivia was created) to hunt down and kill the unnatural monsters from these other worlds that terrorize the people of the Continent.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the showrunner of The Witcher, will be an executive producer; Declan de Barra, who wrote, produced, and even contributed his singing talents to a few episodes of The Witcher, will showrun this miniseries; and Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of the book series The Witcher is based on, will be a creative consultant.

According to a rumor on the well-connected Witcher news site Redanian Intelligence, Aquaman star Jason Momoa is being lined up as the lead in The Witcher: Blood Origin. It’s probably too early for any casting news – but the site has a firm track record. Don’t get too excited just yet is our advice.

The Witcher: Blood Origin – what’s going to happen?

Setting the scene for the content of the show, Hissrich and de Barra tweet a little about what to expect from the show. Hissrich said she “always wanted to dive deeper into the myth and lore of the continent…” And a prequel not bound to existing stories in the Witcher books but still being able to draw on the rich world is a promising starting point and premise.
