The cast include Ethan Hawke , Mason Thames , and Regina Hall . Ethan Hawke plays young orphan Finney Shaw, who is kidnapped and held hostage in a basement by a serial killer. Mason plays eight-year-old Ethan Shaw, Finney’s older brother. And Regina plays Miriam Woolf, the nanny for Ethan and Finney’s mother. Finney Shaw is kidnapped by a serial killer who takes him and locks him in the basement to be murdered. Finney’s brother Ethan goes to look for him.

What are the difficulties they face ?

Ethan Shaw goes looking for his brother, but he is too late. Ethan discovers a boy locked in the basement and learns that his brother was kidnapped by a serial killer who also kidnapped Finney after his mother walked out on him. Ethan gets the idea for a phone that could dial out to any phone, not just landlines. He becomes determined to make the phone work and save Finney from his kidnapper.

What are the themes ?

The themes are hope, life, and inner strength . When Ethan goes to look for Finney in the cellar, he loses hope when he sees that it is empty. Miriam tells him about the Black Phone, a phone that can dial out to any phone number but can only be used in dire situations. Ethan wants to use it to save Finney but Miriam says no because it’ll require all of their money. Ethan still decides to build the phone anyway.

Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?

The antagonist is a man known only as the “killer”. It also has motives for doing what it’s doing which are: to taunt Ethan, to taunt Finney, and to torment Ethan and Finney Shaw. It even goes as far as killing their mother. The setting take place in Alaska. Ethan and his brother only have each other left and live in a trailer that’s located in the woods. Their mother abandoned them when she left for work one day but never returned. Oddly, the serial killer kidnaps Finney from their trailer, lures him into a car and drives him somewhere to later be locked away in a basement.

What are the epic scenes ?

The major scenes of the movie are when Ethan is working on the Black Phone. Due to his intelligence, he is able to make it work. The first time he tries it out , the killer sends a voice message from Finney. When Ethan uses it again, his brother’s voice comes out of it and tells him to use the phone for something good. When Ethan does that, he can hear a recording of their mother telling him that she would be right there waiting for him in Heaven.

Who is the most loved character ?

Ethan is the most loved character in this movie. When I was watching the movie for the first time, I felt that he was very likeable and that he kept me interested . He has a lot of strength about him and has the ability to handle problems in a way where he can deal with them. He is really smart and comes up with many clever ideas to do things that other’s haven’t thought of. One example would be the Black Phone.
