This is the true story of Michael Peterson, his sprawling N.C. family, and the suspicious death of his wife Kathleen. It’s based on a true story and leaves you wondering how the crime went unsolved for so long with few answers as to why or who really did it. We learn a bit about the young man and his background as we follow his family’s lives, beginning in Texas and moving to N.C. where they all eventually settled. The boy seems to have a knack for sniffing out trouble wherever he goes, marring many family relationships with his wayward behavior, but he usually gets away with it as long as he keeps out of jail.

What is the plot of the story ?

The “Staircase” is a combination of drama and mystery, with an underlying murder mystery woven into the mix. When Michael Peterson was a boy he began having strange dreams and visions that often showed him his future. Perhaps because of the visions, he was constantly in trouble, including several run-ins with the police for various infractions. The story begins with the unsolved murder of Kathleen Peterson (Kath). The real reason for her death is unclear – perhaps from an accident or perhaps suicide – but it still left people puzzled, frightened and angry. Her family members apparently knew nothing about what happened, as they continue to search for answers as to her death.

Who is in the cast ? What role did each character portray ?

The cast include Colin Firth , Toni Collette , and some other well-known actors. Michael Peterson was played by this actor, and Kathleen Peterson (Kath) was played by this actress, who were both superb in the roles. Because of the nature of the story, most of the actors tended to play more than one role. For example, Toni Collette played three characters here: Leigh Bush (the missing sister), Candace Zamperini (the daughter), and Willa Peterson (the mother). Each character portrayed a major role.

What are the difficulties they face ?

The characters were always on the move, and they faced many challenges. Michael Peterson (M.P.) was convicted of murdering Kath. Despite his claim that it was an accident, he spent eight years in prison before the case had a not guilty verdict which set him free. The police who originally investigated the crime had been fired from their jobs, and the medical examiner resigned from office due to allegations of misconduct. The climax of the story includes a lot of action and tension, as the film moves into a courtroom trial. The case against Michael Peterson featured many interesting twists and turns, and many surprising revelations.

Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?

The antagonists in the story were mostly Michael Peterson and Kath’s family. In the beginning of the story, they made it very clear that they wanted to do everything possible to find out why she was killed. This is understandable because they did not know what had happened, but they still wanted answers. Later in the story, though, some of them begin to question Michael Peterson’s innocence after a variety of events occur which make him look guilty as opposed to innocent. They felt that his lawyers had become too aggressive with their tactics and were being too antagonistic toward them.

Who is the most loved character ?

Initially, Michael Peterson appears to be the main protagonist of this story. He has all of the characteristics of a protagonist, and he is strongly motivated by family members to “do whatever it takes” to clear his name. He does not ever appear to rest until he finds the real killer of his wife. However, as time progresses and we learn more about him and his family’s past, their motives become more suspect, and their actions are often less than perfect.

Would you recommend watching this ?

Yes. It is very well made and graphically stunning. The story line is told in a way that the viewer can see how the characters feel and what they are doing, yet it still feels like a movie – there is not too much dialogue to slow down the action. All of the actors were wonderful, and you would enjoy their performance as well as the plot of this fabulous true crime story. Thanks for reading !
