This is the story of Kate and Jenny, two moms who meet in a mothers’ group run by a resident Martha. While different from the other moms, they discover a kindred spirit in one another and eventually form an unlikely friendship. But Jenny is hiding a secret from her fellow mothers, and Kate is hiding a secret from her husband.

Kate and Jenny are each other’s biggest critics. Kate often tells her friends in the group that she is getting a divorce, but she is secretly married to her husband. She is also hiding this fact from her best friend, Jenny. When Jenny tells Kate about the possibility of having a baby, Kate feels guilty that she has not told her friend the truth behind her situation. Kate and Jenny’s friends in the mothers’ group include Jane, a single mom who is always at her phone, who is always texting on her phone, and always trying to get attention from men. She also has a short temper which she often shows toward Kate.
Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?
The antagonist is Kate’s husband and Sarah’s father, Bill. The author emphasizes that Bill is a good person, but he has an unusual tendency to overreact when things go wrong. He wants to be able to keep up with his wife and her work life, but also wants to be a stay-at-home dad too. Bill then pressures Kate in order for her to spend more time with him and Sarah instead of working so much. The author uses Bill as a good example of misunderstanding modern marriage of two working parents who are trying their best to balance their professional lives with the responsibilities of family life.
What are the epic scenes ?
Kate’s surprise party – the day she tells her husband (they already have a son) that she is leaving him. Kate and Jenny both meet at a mothers’ group and discuss their marital problems. Sarah is running around the house while her parents argue. Jenny is the character that readers care most about. She is a sensitive person who is easily upset and takes to heart what people say about her. She has a tough exterior but is actually very fragile, which makes readers dislike her husband even more.
