Will and his girlfriend accept the dinner invitation of his ex-wife, Eden, and her husband, David. However, Will believes they have an ulterior motive for inviting them. Moreover, he does not trust them on a personal level — he doesn’t like that they married after only having known each other for a few months. But Will is too polite to only show up without informing them what’s happening; it would be rude to drop by unannounced in this manner.

He says that it has been years since he last saw Eden and David, so there must have been something very specific to bring them together again.

The cast include Logan Marshall Green , Michiel Huisman , Sam Neill, Paul Dano, Patrick Wilson . Logan Marshall portrayed the role of Will, a man who has been estranged with his family for many years now. His wife Eden is a writer who has recently published two novels which were based on her husband’s experiences as a US Army sniper in Afghanistan. The novel’s fame had taken her parents to invite the couple who are estranged from family for an informal dinner function.

What are the difficulties they face ?

The problems the main character faces ranged from those of personal nature to those that had a political nature. The personal problems are linked with his estranged family and the political ones are about the issue of war in Afghanistan. The last half of the story tells us about Will’s feelings towards his childhood.

What are the themes ?

Family ties, loyalty and determination are the key themes of this story. From the way we see Will portrayed, he is loyal to his wife, they had been together a while before she got published and shortly afterwards, his parents start inviting them on dinner functions. This shows the faith he has in Eden’s writing career; he might not have time for her as much as he used to, but he still finds time for his parents who have always been close to him. Visiting one’s family is something that we often overlook today. It is a tradition from which Will has never deviated from.

Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?

In this story the antagonist is the perception that Eden’s parents have about Will. The way they seem to categorize their son-in-law as not being needed in the family, has a dramatic effect on his relationship with his former wife and her new spouse . The antagonist is linked with war as Eden’s family had always been against the war in Afghanistan, they’d lost many friends and family members, whom they still seek to honor. They are not resolute people who are always critical or amenable to change. Therefore their perception of Will will forever remain the same.

What are the epic scenes ?

The dinner at Eden’s house is a scene of epic proportions. It is the first time Will meets Eden and David since they got married. The way he shows up with his girlfriend, whom he previously never mentioned to Eden, feels out of place at first. But later in the conversation Will mentions how he thought it was odd that they were invited as it was not the norm for their parents to do so. It was insulting to him as they seemed to regard him as a stranger who had no place in the family anymore. The most loved character in this book is Eden; she was always the one who stuck to her husband and family, even in the hardest of times. She represented a strong role model for his own daughter who was from an early age the best friend of Eden and David ‘s son.
