Peaky Blinders Season 6 : Tommy Shelby gets Tainted by Fascism forever .
Peaky Blinders is a period drama TV series set in England between 1919 and 1924. It follows the story of Birmingham-based gang, the Peaky Blinders, who sew razor blades into the peaks of their caps as they pursue their criminal ambitions. Originally I thought this show was going to be like all those other crime dramas with predictable plots and characters with flat arcs. I couldn’t have been more wrong! The first season was so much more than just gangsters trying to make ends meet; it touched on themes such as poverty, capitalism, and organized crime.
What is the plot of the story ?
The Peaky Blinders were a gang based in Birmingham at the beginning of the 20th century. The head of this family was Thomas Shelby, (Cillian Murphy), whose aim was to make his family one of the richest in England. He had stolen some rare books when he was young, and hid them for many years. Tommy wants to do legal business but is forced to return to his old ways by a betrayal from a friend. He decides to set up an illegal betting shop. His wife is then kidnapped, and their son killed because of his recklessness.
Who is in the cast ? What role did each character portray ?
The cast include Cillian Murphy , Helen McCrory , Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy), Leo Chapman , Tom Hardy , Paul Anderson , Joseph O’ Connell , Paddy Considine and Emily Atack .The role of the mother is played by Sam Neill . Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy ): Thomas, nicknamed ‘Tommy’, is the head of the family. He is given to violence, and doesn’t hesitate to kill anyone who stands in his way. He often has nightmares, and always wears the suit he was married in. When he finds out that his wife has been kidnapped, he wants to give up everything and leave Birmingham. However, his family isn’t willing to go with him on this adventure.
What are the difficulties they face ?
Tommy leaves his family: It’s a complete change of life for the Shelby family when Thomas Shelby decides to go on vacation and leave his son, Arthur, (Tom Hardy) in charge of the shop. This doesn’t sit well with Thomas, so he decides to kidnap his own daughter, Grace. She is then locked in a room with a piano playing in order to appease her fears. When Grace realizes that her father’s mission wasn’t as good as she thought it would be, she wants to go home to see her mother again. Tommy doesn’t want her to come back “because she will ruin everything”.
What are the themes ?
The poverty of the working poor: Tommy is a ruthless gangster, but he has a soft side for his family. He is forced to do things he doesn’t want to do by the circumstances, but he always turns back to them once he knows they are suffering. When they are gone and are no longer in need of help, he leaves them. Their poverty makes them desperate, angry and desperate again.
Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?
Inspector Chester Campbell: He is the antagonist who wants to capture the gang and put an end to their criminal activities. He doesn’t hesitate to use his prisoners as bait in order to catch them all. He has a brutal and torturous reputation, and always manages to get what he wants without having to kill anyone. What is the outcome ?
The Peaky Blinders escape: Tommy, Polly and Arthur do all they can during their time in prison to find a way out. Arthur sews the opening to Polly, who then gives birth to a baby boy. The baby’s cry was the sound that made them realize they were able to use this tunnel for their means by escaping.
What are the epic scenes ?
The Peaky Blinders’ hideout: The gang’s base was a little house in a small settlement. When they needed to have a meeting, they would all go there. They had to get through one door and then go into another, and climb a ladder to get up to the attic. This little house was the place where most of the action took place. The restaurant scene with the consequences: The gang went to the restaurant, where Polly was made to sing. She screamed for help, creating a huge commotion that everyone in the place heard.
Who is the most loved character ?
Polly Shelby: Tommy and Grace’s only child, Polly was the most loved character in this show. Her father was too harsh and ruthless to love her as much as he should have. She then became a maid in the restaurant where she met Arthur, who went on to become her husband. Because of this scuffle, Grace gets locked up for a few days. This doesn’t sit well with Thomas, who is angered by how careless his daughter was. He does everything he can to keep Polly safe throughout their time together in prison, but she is always willing to help out everyone else first.
Would you recommend watching this ?
I would recommend watching this show because it makes you think about all the issues I mentioned before. It takes you back to the beginning of 20th century, and shows you how hard people used to have to fight for a good job, especially women. It also shows how fragile the lives of everyday people were even in those times. Thanks for reading !
