To be a father is a difficult but rewarding job. It takes a lot of responsibility and heavy lifting to balance the expectations of numerous family members. It requires you to think on your feet and operate with minimal sleep. This novella follows the story of Benitora Estaban, who’s been at the helm in Cuba for his half-brother’s wedding. With every scrap he needs to smooth over tensions between his daughter, her fiancé, her mother, his brother’s new wife, and even old family members from back home in Cuba with whom he has little contact these days.

The story of this novella is the story of a father trying to manage a wedding in the midst of tense family relationships. Benitora, who is from Cuba and has not had contact with his father for years, accompanies his half-brother, and future brother-in-law on a trip from Cuba to Miami to arrange for his daughter’s wedding.

Andy Garcia portrayed the role of the protagonist, Benitora Estaban, a middle aged man trying to make sense of the world. Angelique Esteban played the role of his daughter, Noelia. Adria Arjona portrayed the role of her fiancee, Juan Carlos. Latino Santos portrayed the role of their friend who works at a restaurant in Cuba. Patricia Cruz played the role as Aida Esteban, Benito’s half-brother’s wife who was not happy with her choice to get married. Catalina Garcia played the role as Sandra Gonzalez, Noelia’s mother and Benito’s sister.

What are the difficulties they face ?

The biggest difficulty in this novella is trying to get along with each other and finding time for the different family members. Although there are only two kids at the wedding, there are many people to please, including his estranged father who flew down from Cuba. Benito was able to handle most of the family relationships with clever and quick thinking. When he met with his sister, she thought he was going to make her pay for her daughter’s wedding – which started a heated argument between everyone. Benito however managed to settle everyone down by convincing them that he had paid every cent himself. The themes are fatherly relations and the importance of family. It is not just a good book for fathers, but also for all those who have to deal with their family.

Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?

The antagonist is Sandra Mendez who is Noelia’s and Benito’s mother. She is not fond of the fact that her daughter is getting married. She feels that if she had a son, then the story would have been different. Her motives are to make sure her daughter gets married with nothing but the best. She wants only the best dress, the best honeymoon, and the best life for her daughter. In addition, she wants to make sure that her estranged husband does not get any part of their inheritance from Cuba.

What are the epic scenes ?

The first scene takes place at a restaurant where Benitora has gone to enjoy some Cuban food. He is talking with his brother-in-law about the upcoming wedding. The restaurant owner recognizes Benitora and asks him for a good recipe for the Cuban food that he sells. In the next scene, Noelia meets with her mother who is not happy with the fact that she is getting married so young. However, her mother gets excited when Noelia informs her that she has found out she is pregnant. In the next scene, at noontime, they were having lunch in their room until they were interrupted by their mother who called them downstairs to attend a meeting.

I would recommend watching it because it is a good movie. I learned a lot from this movie a lot. It was not your average wedding movie and presents us with a very real problem that many people face. In addition, I am sure people of all ages will enjoy this film. Thanks for reading !
