Genndy Tartakovsky on Season 2 of Primal, Adult Animated Stories, and the Current State of the Medium

Primal

Creator of the Cartoon Network hit Samurai Jack, Genndy Tartakovsky is a modern-day animation pioneer. After directing both Star Wars: Clone Wars and Hotel Transylvania, he’s now at the helm of his latest project, an Adult Swim series called Primal.

In this interview for Cartoon Brew’s coverage of MIPCOM in Cannes, Tartakovsky discusses his personal views on the current state of animation and how he strives to keep it from “dying,” and talks about some of the aspects that went into animating Primal—including collaborating with Michel Gagné who did many drawings for Tartakovsky in his early days as an animator.

Introduction to the Primal

The idea for the Primal Cartoon came about with a ridiculous idea for a cartoon. It is about a wolf on an island who is taken in by a dinosaur family as one of their own. The story was written out and it evolved into what is now the Primal cartoon! Meet our protagonist, Lex, in this introduction!

Through this introduction, you will be given background knowledge on the primal cartoon. You will learn how it got its name and how it came to be. You may also meet Lex and her mother Diana in this post!

The series kicks off with a sweeping overview of the world that we now inhabit which includes not just humans but a variety of different animals. The human population starts to expand exponentially while other species start to dwindle. Also, after being hunted or otherwise displaced by human activity.

A scientist named Timothy manages to create a virus that would kill only humans. And he releases it in New York City, which was one of many areas. Also, where humans were making minimal efforts to curb growth.

The virus was a success in terms of humans dying off, but Timothy had miscalculated and the virus didn’t kill off all of the humans. The ones that survived were those that we now know as Primal Urges, basically humans with animal instincts. It’s interesting to note that even though these “primal” are similar to animals, they’re not like some random animal in the world; they’re almost always humanoids or can be turned into anthropomorphic animals.

After the first few episodes, some things become clear: primals have no culture at this point and they’re only interested in basic needs like feeding and mating.

Next month, HBO Max will premiere Season Two of Adult Swim’s Primal

Adult Swim’s popular, Emmy-nominated series, “Primal,” will be returning in its second season on HBO Max in November. The series is the one-hour animated comedy of man vs. nature where animals take over the planet and we’re left to fend for ourselves.

I’ve seen parts of this show before and while it doesn’t seem to be as adult-oriented as some other Adult Swim shows I’ve seen in the past, it’s still a good show with some pretty cool animation.
