The Upcoming Comedy Horror Film ‘Beau Is Afraid’ Starring Joaquin Phoenix

In January 2017, Beau Is Afraid will be released in theatres and on distribution platforms. It is an upcoming comedy horror film directed by Ari Aster (Hereditary) and starring Joaquin Phoenix.  The movie is set to release in 2023. In this new movie, Phoenix plays a young man who’s struggling with the aftermath of his mother’s death. He’s lost almost everything from her, and he is haunted by the events in his childhood. The film is a homage to classic Hollywood ghost films but is also said to carry some of Aster’s signature horror elements. 

Unable to deal with the loss of his mother, he gets involved in an unusual therapy group that challenges him to meet his greatest fear. The therapy group has a paranormal twist as it involves the subconscious mind. To control negative thoughts and emotions, he must confront harrowing memories and face his greatest fears. The film seems to be a look at the psychological trauma of losing a loved one and confronting it on a personal level. Phoenix has been confirmed to star in the movie, which will be distributed by A24.
