When most people read the classic story “The Wizard of Oz,” they are taken away to a fantasy world. That’s because it was a script that conjured up the mind of an imaginative little girl in her head, and she made everything up. But there is also another side to this story—one where the audience is swept away into a provocative, fiendish world. From talking crows to temperamental monkeys, all while still losing sight of Dorothy’s goal—all in their effort to follow her through Oz and escape their mundane reality .
What is the plot of the story ?
The story takes place entirely in Kansas, where Dorothy, a little girl living with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, dreams of her life as a princess in the magical land of Oz. As the story begins, she is hit by a cyclone that carries her and her dog, Toto, to the magical land. Her first encounter is with the Scarecrow who is looking for brains; and he wants to know if they can help him. Dorothy agrees to help him when she finds out that one of his subjects do not have brains.
Who is in the cast ? What role did each character portray ?
The cast include Judy Garland , Jack Haley , Ray Bolger and Margaret Hamilton who is playing the Wicked Witch of the West. Ray Bolger was chosen because he was the best actor in the chorus. The next day, there was a big audition, and he received the role of Scarecrow. When he came to Los Angeles, they gave him a hat with straw in it; this hat had to move each time he spoke. Ray Bolger studied with Dr. William Allender who taught him how to talk like a puppet and to move his lips for his puppeteering. The part of Toto went to Dorthy’s dog, which was troublesome for everyone else but very fun for Ray Bolger; it caused problems between him and Margaret Hamilton .
What are the difficulties they faced ?
Ray Bolger wanted to be in the movie and had hoped to be a part of the world of Oz but he was told that he could not appear in the film. However, he got his wish when they decided to change the ending. He was paid $3500 (a great salary at that time) which helped him keep his family’s house. He later signed on again with MGM as a voice artist and made two shorts with Walt Disney.
What are the themes ?
The themes of the film are: When you are small, you think that life is wonderful; later on, when your size grows up, and reality hits home, it can be depressing. Dorothy’s adventure led to her encounter with the Wicked Witch of the West who wreaked havoc on Oz. In the end, she returned to her house and reunited with her family.
Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?
The antagonist is the wicked witch, who is named as the witch of the west. In the book, she is only a red-headed witch but in this film, it is a green-skinned witch with a hooked nose. The idea for the character was created by L. Frank Baum. When he was asked to write this story, he had lived in Chicago and later returned to Wisconsin with his wife and child. After they moved to Kansas, they attended a neighbor’s funeral and said that they would stay there forever. The wife died after giving birth to their second child so L.
What are the epic scenes ?
There are several epic scenes, including when the house lands in Oz and falls on a witch and when Dorothy is being chased by Oz-ians. The director of “Oz” used these scenes to show how the characters lose their sense of direction as they get lost. The witch was melted by water, which makes her powerless. Dorothy cast a spell on her with water in order to destroy her. They escape because there are only three things that can harm the witch: water, fire, or a hammer called the Hammer of the Witch.
Would you recommend watching this ?
I would recommend watching Judy Garland’s performance as Dorothy because it is a zany and hilarious performance. She is portrayed as a child who wants everything to be perfect, but she actually has a lot of courage and strength about her. She also helps her friend who was being pursued by the witch whom she believes killed her. Thanks for reading !
