Dangerous Liaisons, which was the first foray of American network TV into French high fashion, has been canceled after initial renewal. This is not entirely unexpected given the current climate in television. With a fan base (and popularity) that almost rivaled that of Gypsy, there was little expectation that this series would succeed on its own with audiences as well. We spoke with writer and collaborator Ashley J. Welsh about Dangerous Liaisons and what he thinks may be the reason for some of its downfall here in America: “I think it’s because we are so saturated with so many things, this show felt like it didn’t offer anything new or different for people to want to include it in their schedules. However, when the series was quickly renewed for a second season, it was assumed that a network would at least couple the show with an existing television show that had an audience. Thus far, the network has declined. An explanation as to why is unclear given the matter is being handled privately, however, there is no doubt that this decision will not be taken lightly given recent decisions by other networks.

What is the series about?
Dangerous Liaisons is an adaptation of the classic French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The series centers on two manipulative ex-lovers who use their seductive wiles to wreak havoc on the lives of others. Following a brief period of happiness following the birth of their daughter, Judith decides to leave her husband to engage in a tumultuous affair with her boss. This deeply affects the life and family life of her childhood best friend and his wife, who harbor secrets of their own that threaten to tear apart Judith’s already fragile world. A love triangle is an intense relationship that begins with a passionate beginning and then experiences definite ups and downs as the episode progresses. It could happen in high school or college, a job, a political movement, or a family. All of these relationships have their own set of risks and rewards, so it is only natural that you would want to compare the outcomes before making your final decision about which one to be with for the rest of your life.
What makes this series interesting?
While Dangerous Liaisons shares this universal theme with many other TV shows, it is the very specific and intricate details of the story that make it unique. This adaptation of the classic novel has been translated into English for American audiences by Harriet Warner, who has also worked on popular shows like “The Borgias,” “Penny Dreadful” and “Boardwalk Empire.” This show will appeal to those who enjoy period-piece dramas, romance, and mystery and those that appreciate a good ‘who-dun-it’. The real reason for the success of this show can be found in its ability to capture the regal and opulent world of the French aristocracy.
Who can watch this series?
Dangerous Liaisons is for those viewers who enjoy watching sexy, seductive dramas anchored by strong leading characters. It is also for the person who enjoys a good mystery with a little period-piece flair. If you have ever enjoyed the naughty naughtiness of “Dangerous Liaisons” or “The Borgias” or even “Revenge,” then this show is for you.
