Netflix and Sega are teaming up for a new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series called Sonic Prime, set to premiere this December. The series will spend some time in the Shatterverse, an alternate universe created by Dr. Eggman’s interference in reality. The show will also feature popular characters from both universes like Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Shadow, and Rouge the Bat but with a twist. Everyone’s a little bit different in the Shatnerverse, and they’ve also been turned into super-powered beings as a result of Eggman’s meddling. “The Sonic you know and love has been re-imagined with a new look, new friends, new, foes, and, an all-new adventure,” Netflix teases. “Get ready for an epic journey as Sonic crosses the world to put things right,” Netflix says it will premiere in all territories where the streaming service is available this December.

What is the series about?
Sonic Prime is a new anime-inspired animated series from Sonic Team and Sonic the Hedgehog – yup, he’s been shrunken down to six inches tall, but no less powerful – that reimagines the blue hedgehog’s origins. The show will run for 8 episodes and is set to be released on the 15th of December 2022. The series follows Sonic waking up in a world that is vastly different from the one he remembers, that is populated by both characters from the Sonic franchise and new ones. Sonic is still at the center of the story, but this time around he has to also save other heroes – like Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Shadow and, Rouge – who have been turned into super-powered beings as a result of Eggman’s meddling. When Sonic goes on his journey to save them, they will also join him in an “epic journey” to put things right.
Why should you watch this series?
Sonic Prime sounds like a fun adventure for those of us who grew up with the original games and television series. One of the best parts about the original Sonic games is that you felt like you were watching someone else play, especially in the 3D games. With this new series, it sounds like we’ll be getting to see what everyone’s been doing since they were six years old. PLUS it’s got a great cast of characters that are sure to return from the previous shows. There’s never been a better time to get in on this new Shatnerverse.
What is the targeted audience?
The series is targeted at “kids ages six to eleven years, as well as longtime fans of the series”, according to Netflix. It boasts that it will meet the “scale and scope” of other stories in the franchise. It also sounds like it’s going to be good for a laugh with the humor that comes from the characters themselves.
