Christopher Nolan’s Epic Sci-Fi Adventurous Film ‘Interstellar’

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the one I keep coming back to even years after watching it. The story is a compelling sci-fi adventure that explores how mankind could survive on a foreign planet. Christopher Nolan directed and co-wrote this film with his brother Jonathan Nolan, getting together with scriptwriter Jonathan Brunsdon for the project too. While most audience members are willing to go along for the ride, its science is pretty straightforward. This film is based on a book called The Science of Interstellar by Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist most well-recognized for his work with black holes, gravitational waves, and relativity. The film does stick fairly close to the story, though some details and science are changed to make it more accessible to all audiences. I recommend reading the book before you watch the film. I also recommend seeing it in a theatre with a lot of people around you, because there are moments that are so suspenseful they can make your hair stand on end.

What is the plot of the film?
The story is set in the future, as humanity has learned to travel between galaxies utilizing wormholes, which allow them to travel vast distances without using much energy but at very high speeds. Of course, that means that one technological leap has left humanity vulnerable to extinction – and if they don’t change they run the risk of being eaten by an alien life form known as ‘the Hunger’. Earth sends out a massive spaceship called ‘the Endurance’ which travels through a wormhole for over 100 years before arriving at another galaxy. The crew has been chosen to start a colony on a suitable planet, but the Endurance gets damaged in transit. The leader of the crew, Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey), and two other astronauts, travel to a nearby planet where they believe they can find help. They encounter a mysterious young girl named ‘Murph’ who talks to them via text-based message boards from many years in their past.
What is exciting about the film?
The film is visually stunning and will have you on the edge of your seat more than once. One of the most exciting aspects is the astounding, detailed special effects. They captured the look and feel of space very well in my opinion, making for some great visuals. This movie also makes you think about our place as a race in the universe, and how humanity might be able to survive even though we’re vulnerable to disaster on our home planet. It gives us hope for humanity’s survival by suggesting that we may not have destroyed ourselves just yet despite all of the conflicts.
Why should you watch this film?
This movie is a great story, and I would highly recommend it to anybody looking to enjoy an exciting film that will make you think about our place in the universe. The story is good enough that you can watch it even if you’ve never read the book, but don’t be surprised if you want to rewatch it because there are so many little details that make this movie so much more interesting and compelling than just watching a bunch of people interacting on a spacecraft.
