Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Sets To Star In Upcoming Film ‘Seesaw Monster’

Netflix is at it again. The streaming service has just announced the production of Seesaw Monster, a film adaptation of Japanese writer Kōtarō Isaka’s novel about two women who start as rivals forced to work together to fight off an evolving monster. although Netflix is taking things one step further and inserting its twists into the prose with the inclusion of both Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault in their respective leading roles. The film adaptation of Kōtarō Isaka’s novel “Seesaw Monster” will star Anne Hathaway (pictured here) and Salma Hayek Pinault (pictured here) as rivals forced to work together to fight off an evolving monster. Netflix has not yet announced the film’s release date and it remains to be seen if the streaming service will go with an English-language or Japanese-language release of Seesaw Monster. Regardless, the film should be a great opportunity for both Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault to work together, which is something that neither actress has done in a feature film before.
What is the release date?
Netflix hasn’t announced the release date for Seesaw Monster yet, but there’s a chance that it could premiere near Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault’s other major upcoming project.
What is the film about?
The project will be produced by Netflix in conjunction with Japanese production companies Toho, Fuji Television Network, Inc., Toei Company Ltd., and Arclight Films. Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek will also be producing the film along with Jerry Zucker (Ghost, Airplane!, Top Secret). Seesaw Monster follows a woman who questions her mother-in-law’s mysterious past and discovers secrets that threaten to shake her family. The two women, usually ready to jump at each other’s throats, are also forced to work together when that mysterious past puts both of their lives at risk. It’s the perfect frame for an action-comedy, which sounds like it will play out like a live-action version of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away or Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira the movie.
What is the audience expecting from the film?
Netflix has a pretty solid track record when it comes to adapting anime, manga, and live-action overseas properties. Films like Death Note, Bright, and A Silent Voice have all followed that trend, so this seems like a natural progression for them. Here’s the kicker: Seesaw Monster is going to be Netflix’s first-ever Japanese theatrical release. It might not be headed in the same vein of prestige as a Best Foreign Language Feature Oscar contender, but it will provide Netflix with an opportunity to garner lots of exposure from potential fans in Japan who may not know about the streaming service yet. Regardless, the film should be a great opportunity for both Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault to work together, which is something that neither actress has done in a feature film before.
Why should I watch this film?
Every time Netflix brings in big names for its original content, it creates a lot of hype for its projects. After all, Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek are two of the biggest stars in Hollywood today and have collaborated on screen only twice before. It’s going to be a lot of fun to see these actresses tackle the sci-fi elements of this film and it will be exciting to see if it’s setting up for an adaptation of Kōtarō Isaka’s novel, “Seesaw Monster.” After all, judging from the book’s description, it seems like it could go in any number of directions.
