‘Kindred’ TV Series Based On Octavia E. Butler’s Novel Releasing This December

One of the most anticipated television series adaptations to hit the airwaves this year is based on Octavia E. Butler’s acclaimed best-selling novel, Kindred. The story tells of Dana James (Mallori Johnson) who finds herself from her current life in modern day Philadelphia to 1864 Maryland, where she meets a fugitive slave illegally hiding out on her family’s plantation. From there, she becomes embroiled in forbidden romance and dangerous secrets that will lead to an uncertain fate for them both. If you haven’t read the novel yet, here is a brief on what the story is going to be about: “In this dazzling and moving adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s classic novel, a young black woman from Los Angeles finds herself mysteriously transported in time to early 19th century Maryland. Once there, she becomes entangled with two plantation owners  a white man who has already lost his wife and will soon lose his son as well; and her own white ancestor who has been brought to Baltimore for sale.

The Series is scheduled to premiere on 13th of December 2022.

What is the series about?

The series is based on a book written by Octavia t. Butler and will premiere next month on Hulu (december 13th 2022) the series is about a woman named Dana James who along with her family and friends move to Los Angeles in hopes of making their dreams of becoming famous writers/musicians happen. as a result of a visit from an old family friend who is dying a young black woman named dana james is transported in time to 19s century maryland where she becomes involved in forbidden romance, dangerous secrets, and shocking revelations about her family’s past and the dark pasts of 18th century maryland. The series is a drama that focuses on Dana’s struggle to find her own footing, overcome the prejudice and the segregation of the time, and experience for herself what it means to be black in America. It seems very heavy in themes as it deals with the struggles of slavery, rape, and the fear of coming out about who you are. 

Why should I watch this series?

This series is set to be a short season that will bring out all the great things about this book, and will be more of an experience than a linear story. The tone of the novel is very atmospheric and mysterious, and the world around it feels lived in. Butler’s description of Maryland was so vivid that it felt as if you were right there. This series should capture all the emotions you feel while reading Butler’s work, but also showcase how beautifully her imagination could bring this story to life. 

Who can watch this series?

The series is for mature audiences, and is definitely not for children. While the book does have some light elements to it, this series will definitely make you feel vulnerable emotionally. Just like in reading the book, you may feel intense anger at the people in this show, especially if you have similar experiences to Dana James.
