Netflix’s Historical Drama ‘The Crown’ Is Coming Back With Season Five

In just four seasons, The Crown has captured the attention of viewers across the world. Following the real-life story of Queen Elizabeth II and her family’s reign through eight decades of change, Netflix’s groundbreaking television series has won multiple awards and turned its cast into international stars. Now, fans have something to look forward to: Season 5 is finally in the works. The fifth season of The Crown will start streaming on November 9th, with its final 10 episodes set to premiere in 2022. Since the first season of The Crown, Netflix has been working on securing the rights to some real-life royals for future seasons. Queen Elizabeth II has been played by Claire Foy since the show’s debut in 2016, but she isn’t the only member of the royal family who’ll appear on screen again. Matt Smith starred as Prince Philip for three seasons before he was replaced by Josh O’Connor after Smith departed from the series following its third season finale.

What is the plot of the series?
Season 1-5 of The Crown tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign from the point of view of her secretary, Lord Corbin. In this perspective, we see the day-to-day decisions made in the Royal household, how she is a politician and how her experiences as a growing woman shape her leadership. The season centres on Elizabeth’s engagement to Prince Philip (who is played by Matt Smith). We also see the challenges she faces growing up as a young monarch in the early 1950s, a time when she is dealing with Cold War tensions, the first assassination of an American president, the rise of protests (sometimes violent) and a changing world.
How many seasons were there?
The first season of The Crown was released in 2016, with subsequent seasons releasing each year since. While Netflix had initially announced a total of four seasons and also it has been renewed for a fifth season. The executive producers behind the show include Peter Morgan, Robert Foxx, Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries. Each season is 10 episodes long.
