“I am DB Cooper” Is A Real Crime Story Coming Up This Fall

Yes, you read that correctly: DB Cooper, that infamous 1970s hijacker who made off with $200,000 of ransom money plus a parachute in exchange for the safe return of three passengers from a Seattle-bound flight. I’m not sure why I’m so excited about it (maybe because I write crime novels and am obsessed with true crime). What I do know is this upcoming TV series based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book “The Final Hours” will be worth tuning into this fall. The story is an interesting one – one unlike any other piece of entertainment we’ve seen before.

What will be the movie based upon?

“I am DB Cooper,” a true crime story based upon the extraordinary events surrounding the hijacking of Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305, which took place on November 24, 1971. The movie will kick-off with the hijacking and airlift of a Boeing 727 plane – containing 36 passengers and crew – which was in flight. DB Cooper, who escaped with $200,000 ($1.75 million in 2018) after parachuting out of the plane north of Seattle, remains one of the great unsolved mysteries and crimes in America. Cooper’s true identity has never been conclusively proven. In fact, the FBI closed the case on July 8th 2017. The bureau noted that it may never reveal its findings, stating in a press release that “the decision to close the Cooper case was made after field agents had conducted exhaustive research, reviewed all available evidence and interagency files, evaluated multiple leads, and interviewed individuals with possible connection to the parachutes or the hijacking.”

What will be interesting about this movie?

Aside from the fact that it’s a true crime story, it will also be interesting to see whether or not the movie will actually delve into the FBI files. So far, there’s no indication that this will occur. However, the producers of “I am DB Cooper” have said that other details will be true to the crime investigation.

What do critics say about this upcoming movie?

Well, as of now, “I am DB Cooper” is considered a “pre-production,” but the producers are already aware of its potential. “We are excited and nervous because it’s not a sure thing that it will be made,” executive producer Michael Massee said. “I am DB Cooper” is also an intriguing true crime story for the movie industry to tell. While most films about crime and investigation are based in the past, this one will be based in current events. The documentary style of note might also cause some audiences to watch with more critical eyes than they usually would.

What do we think about this movie?

I am DB Cooper will be somewhat akin to “JFK,” in that it’s not just about the crime, but also about the repercussions of it. While the focus of “I am DB Cooper” will be on the pilot and flight attendant who were hijacked and believed to have died, it will also touch upon the FBI’s investigation and how they forced a break in the case. Then there are those who believe that Cooper might actually still be alive. The original FBI files stated that he could have survived after being shot twice but remained conscious enough to drive away from an airport in a rented car which would explain why he was never found.
