What is the movie based upon?
The film idea was inspired by the work of physicists and the philosophy of time, but it’s fictional. It’s more about the choices people make and what they stand to lose – and gain – when they take a chance on love. Time travel is a fascinating concept in itself and we’re excited to be exploring this, but Debra is above all else a story of human relationships, both the good and bad. It’s about decision-making and choices, the cost and rewards of love – from the young to the old – as well as family structures, past, and future. And at its heart, it’s about what happens when people stop believing in themselves, others, or the world around them. Those who have made bad mistakes need to take responsibility for their actions; those who have taken risks and lost can find redemption.
What makes this story interesting?
What makes this film interesting is the premise – which allows all of us to ask questions and explore the possibility of time travel and what it means to be human. It’s a story that explores how we can learn from our mistakes, how we can grow and be better individuals as we age, and how we can let go of the past so that we can move forward with our lives. The science of it is just window dressing.
What sci-fi fans are expecting to happen in this new film?
I think audiences will be surprised at how much heart and emotion are in this story. It’s a character piece first and foremost, with a huge amount of honesty about relationships and what we all face as we age. I call it a heartwarming film with an edge. It’s about people who have lost their way: the young, the old and those caught somewhere in between who have to find their way back to themselves and each other. There’s some great humor and clever time travel twists, but for me most importantly I hope it connects with people because the story does ask hard questions about ourselves as human beings.
