Everything About ‘The Devil In The White City’ TV Series Is Here

It’s been a little over a month since the production company behind the upcoming TV series The Devil in the White City announced their investment and intentions to bring Erik Larson’s novel to life on your television screen. Now, we have some interesting details about what they’re up to. But first, let’s take a step back and talk about what kind of story this is going to be.

But the real story is a bit broader than that, at least in terms of what we intend to explore. There’s the larger story of the Chicago World’s Fair with all of its many ingredients. There’s a look at the birth of serial killing and what happened when it came to Chicago. And then there’s an exploration of architecture and its place in everyday life and how it can be used for very different purposes. We intend to combine historical fact with fiction in order to bring this world to viewers in a way that will feel authentic, yet still be entertaining. Those are the defining elements, but there are many other details we’re eager to share and explore as we move forward. Here is a summary of the features we’re most excited about:

What will be the series based upon?

The Devil in the White City is a book that examines and celebrates the architecture of the 1893 World’s Fair and features detailed descriptions of many of the buildings – including those that existed before it, too.

As such, we felt we were best suited to create a story about this fair and its buildings. As we’ve said before , there are dozens of other stories about Chicago during that time period that had a huge impact on history from gang wars to racial tensions to labour issues. But because we intend to focus on the World’s Fair itself, as well as its architecture, there was no choice but to go with the 1893 fair for our exploration.

How will this series attract readers?

We know that there are many people out there who have read Erik Larson’s book and enjoyed it. And, I imagine, many of them have never heard of the 1893 World’s Fair. We believe that a project like this is a uniquely attractive one for local readers. We’re excited to share the world of the fair with other Chicagoans and visitors to our city at large as well as viewers across the country who may not be familiar with what Chicago was like at a similar time in its history. There are also countless historical enthusiasts who will love the chance to explore more than just this particular world through watching it unfold on TV.

Why should you watch this series?

If you enjoy historical fiction as well as period drama, then this is something you wouldn’t want to miss. We’re hoping that by telling the story of the World’s Fair and its buildings we’ll be able to share something of interest with people across all walks of life. Even if only a few people are drawn in by what we create, we’ll at least have been able to provide another entry point into Chicago’s history for viewers who have never read Erik Larson’s novel.
