At the box office, “Top Gun: Maverick” is getting close to $700 million while “Dragon Ball Super” is plummeting by 78%

In the early 1980s, several movies hit theaters that would go on to become some of the most beloved classic films in history. However, out of all the films released in these decades, one has managed to take home more money than all of them combined: “Top Gun: Maverick”. “Top Gun” was released on 27 May 2022 and quickly went on to be the highest-grossing movie in history with a total gross of $356.2 million. In contrast, ‘Dragon Ball Super has since been surpassed by many other movies made during this period. It has a total gross as low as $200 million.
Introduction to The Top Gun: Maverick
The film begins with a scene of Goose’s funeral. Maverick is seen in the back submerged in the water, he is approached by the only person attending, his former friend and Viper pilot Cougar. The two share a harsh exchange before they leave separately. In the present day, two new pilots arrive at their childhood home and are introduced to their new squadron: Miles Quaritch (Owen Wilson) and Eli Cross (Val Kilmer). They have been assigned to F-14 Tomcat training as well as under command of Surgeon General Dr. Lee ‘Soup’ Jonsson (Dennis Quad), who briefs them about an upcoming joint military exercise where both squadrons will take part.

Story of The Top Gun: Maverick
The story starts when a plane was shot down and left behind by the enemy. The pilot, Lieutenant Pete Mitchell, was famous among his comrades and highly respected. One day while flying an unarmed reconnaissance plane over North Vietnam, he found himself in a very tough spot. After taking out several anti-aircraft batteries of guns led by Colonel Vogel who is one of the most dangerous men alive on the planet with no one to help him, he managed to rescue two US Army pilots that were being held prisoner in North Vietnam.

To get out alive, he had to make a few very dangerous maneuvers and even take on enemy MiGs with only his plane to rely on. After that day, his name was well known around the world for being a prodigy pilot. He was promoted to Top Gun and decided that the best way to honor his comrades who were killed during those years in Vietnam was by training future generations of pilots at Top Gun Academy. Lt. Pete Mitchell showed no signs of slowing down after returning home. He requested a desk job but was denied it by Admiral Mike Metcalf (Godfather).
What Made “Top Gun” and “Maverick” So Successfully Simple?
For those of you who have any interest in aviation, or are generally looking for something to watch on Netflix, I highly recommend “Top Gun: Maverick”. It stars Tom Cruise as a fighter pilot named Pete Mitchell and Val Kilmer as his rival, Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky. As an aviator myself (albeit one from the Navy), this film captures the essence of what it means to be a naval aviator – not only in terms of fighting skills but also in terms of character and attitude.
