A Magdalene Is A Women’s Prison In Ireland.

There are over 70,000 women incarcerated in the Republic of Ireland today and many are mothers who have been imprisoned solely due to their choice to keep their babies. According to data released by The National Council for the Welfare of Unborn Children, the number of children born in Magdalene Laundries stood at 7,947 children by 2014.

Many of these women were sent there because of pregnancies or births outside of marriage. By the 1940s, Magdalene Laundries were becoming a permanent fixture in Ireland. By 1996, 29 such institutions were operating and employing some 24,000 women; more than half of those incarcerated were mothers who had unmarried children at home.

As Ireland was an overwhelmingly Catholic country during this period, there was no appeal or recourse for these women. In 1996, Ireland’s last Magdalene Laundry closed its doors except for one which housed mothers in Dublin who had their children taken away from them.
