The Creator of ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ Is Keen to Direct a Japanese Language Film Starring an All-Japanese Cast
Tsuyoshi Hara, director of Ghost of Tsushima, wants to make a film that has a total Japanese cast. Hara has stated “This is the first show in which I don’t want to do any English cast. It’s not that I’m against it or anything, but if you’re going to do an English-language show and you want me to direct it, then we should have an American cast.” He also commented on what he wanted for this film: “I feel like people are looking at Japan as this monolithic culture but it isn’t—it is just one of many diverse cultures,” says Hara.
Introduction to The Ghost of Tsushima
The Ghost of Tsushima is an upcoming open-world single-player game in development by Sucker Punch Productions. And published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game will be set in feudal Japan and follows the story of Jin Sakurai. A samurai fighting to unite Japan against the Mongol Empire. The main protagonist of the game is Jin Sakurai, a first-generation samurai. Who was spared from the Mongol invasion of his extraordinary skills with a blade? Jin has pledged service to Lord Gohda and is tasked with defending Tsushima from foreign invaders. Also, those who come armed with guns and cannons challenge Tsushima’s traditional sword-based warfare.

Story of The Ghost of Tsushima
The Ghost of Tsushima is a movie that tells the tale of a band of Samurai who are forced to take up the cause against their will and fight the Mongol invaders. The story takes place in 1274, during Japan’s Gempei War. It’s difficult to say what kind of reception The Ghost of Tsushima will have when it releases later this year, as it’s an unfamiliar story to most Westerners (and not many people know about Eastern history outside Japan). But after viewing trailers for the game, I think there is going to be both a sense of excitement from gamers who want something different and sheer terror from those who are familiar with Japanese folklore…
The Ghost of Tsushima Producer Talks About Their Film’s Future
The Ghost of Tsushima Director Interview recently took place and the director, Sucker Punch CEO and President Chris Zimmerman gave several helpful clues to what we can expect from their upcoming game. The interview itself is a hefty read that features plenty of information about gameplay, the theme behind the story, teamwork from other development partners, and more. Some highlights from the interview:
-Zimmerman comments on how this will be “the first Sucker Punch game with no gunfights”
-The Director mentions how he wanted players to feel like they were “a very skilled samurai who was feeling vulnerable”
-There will be both melees and ranged combat elements in GHOST OF TSUSHIMA.
