The search for a new head of the SVU started as soon as Warren retired. Instead of choosing a senior federal prosecutor who had experience with SVU, writers turned to people from the NYPD who had worked within SVU. The new cast included (in order of appearance): Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler, Elizabeth Keifer as Detective Olivia Benson, Richard Belzer as Detective John Munch, Angie Harmon as Detective Alexandra Cabot, Dann Florek as Captain Donald Cragen, and Danny Pino as Detective Joe Fontana.

This is a huge departure from his predecessor, Dann Florek, who played Captain Cragen from the beginning.
