The storyline of The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy is a comic book series created by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. It follows the lives of seven children who are born on the same day, but each has strengths and abilities that are different from one another. The story begins with an assassination attempt on the president, which is stopped by a team of superheroes called The Umbrella Academy. They are soon disbanded after the death of their leader, Sir Reginald Hargreeves.

Hargreeves, before he died, adopted seven children who had abnormal abilities:

In addition to these seven adopted children, he also fathered a child in his wife, who was later revealed to have died giving birth. The child, Luther Hargreeves (The Monocle), is still alive and plays an important role in the storyline as well.

Why a contentious assault scene in Umbrella Academy undermines a character’s entire tale

After watching the first episode of The Umbrella Academy, I was immediately hooked. I believe this series has huge potential. However, one part of the show that got me confused was the assault scene between Number Five and a female classmate. It felt out of place and too graphic, leaving me with an empty feeling after it ended. This is exactly what Claremont wanted to do with these scenes—ruin a character’s story by doing something unexpected like this. Adam Hughes, who designed Number Five and contributed to the storyboards for this scene, explained that he and the creative team wanted to do something that was “not what most would expect.”
