Mort is a down-on-his-luck, middle-aged man in L.A. His life has been an unending string of disappointments–the failure of his record business, the dissolution of his marriage to a woman he barely knew, and the revelation that he is dying from cancer. Mort’s only solace has been Kate, the woman he met in an online dating service for people whose death date was close to his own. But Kate just broke off their relationship because she didn’t want to watch him die–a decision that leaves Mort alone with nothing but time on his hands and thoughts of suicide filling his head.

This story is about Mort, a man who learns that he has cancer and that he only has a year to live. When his fiancée leaves him because she doesn’t want to watch him die, Mort falls into a deep depression and begins to contemplate suicide. Mort gets happy & starts to fall in love with Kate, but Kate doesn’t want to be around him when she watches him die. Eventually, her feelings for Mort get stronger and Kate decides she wants to start a relationship with him after all.

The difficulties faced by the characters in the movie include Mort’s longing for death, his failed suicide attempts, Kate’s trying to find the right time to tell him she loves him, and her reluctance to be with Mort because of his impending death. The main themes of the story include love and death. The movie uses Mort’s relationship with Kate to show that even though the two of them are in different places in their life. They still can find love and can make it work. Another theme that is in this movie is the question of how we choose to deal with our mortality while we are alive. Mort always felt he was wasting time. But with his impending death looming, he begins to see his life in a new light.

Who is the antagonist? What are its motives?

The main antagonist in the story is Mort’s ex-fiancée, Kate, who breaks up with him. Because she doesn’t want to watch him die. She doesn’t want to spend time with him. But she doesn’t want to lose his friendship. One of the more epic scenes in the movie is when Mort tries to kill himself while Kate is out. But at the attempt. He learns that he can’t do it because he wants to live. He feels a new sense of happiness, and he knows that there is something in life that makes it worth living. The character with the most love in the story is Mort, but another person who gets a lot of respect is Kate. The audience likes her because she doesn’t want to be with Mort.  But still gives him a chance to be with her. She shows a lot of patience and respect.
