If you’re into Sci-Fi, mysteries, or spooky things in general, then the Netflix hit show Stranger Things is for you. In a post-apocalyptic world where the government isn’t what it claims to be, and supernatural forces are stirring up all around us, we follow a group of children who unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries. With heart-pounding sequences, psychologically gripping characters, and an atmospheric soundtrack that sets the mood just right every time (seriously — turn off your lights and put on this track), it’s tough not to be hooked by this story

What is the plot of the story?

It centers around a small town called Hawkins, Indiana. In the 1980s, it is bustling with life. Everything seems normal and healthy. There’s a mall, a park, and everything its citizens could desire. Then the government takes everything away from them — from their freedom to their love for each other – and children across the country start to disappear. One by one, our children turn up missing in strange circumstances: some are hurt or killed. Some aren’t found at all. Some are taken, but their fate is unknown. No one knows that the government is responsible for this.

Who is in the cast? What role did each character portray?

The cast includes Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Charlie Heaton. Finn Wolfhard (Mike) is a likable protagonist. A genuinely helpful, loyal, and kind-hearted character, Mike provides the audience with a relatable and human sidekick. We see Mike become aware of the supernatural forces lurking around him, but as he uses his intelligence to solve problems – instead of his fists – he allows us to see the world through his eyes. He is supported by his friends Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Will (Noah Schnapp).

What are the difficulties they face?

When the mysterious force that has taken many children starts to take a toll on the group, Mike goes into self-imposed exile, seeking answers. There are many moments in the show when Mike is faced with difficult decisions: should he confront friends who have turned on him or stay apart from them? Should he trust new people and organizations that offer help or put his trust in old ones? This series explores how we respond to loss, separation, and also betrayal. But more importantly, it shows how we can overcome these obstacles and keep our spirits alive.

What are the themes?

The show explores the struggles of modern teenagers in a very unique way. It is narrated by the children, not adults. There is no moral authority figure. There is no one to guide them or keep them safe. There’s not even a mentor they can turn to for advice and help — except each other. But they face a lot of challenges: harmful forces that lurk nearby, threatening to take their lives;  and also supernatural beings that manipulate time and space to abduct their younger friends; and the politics of keeping knowledge of strange occurrences from those who can do something about it — including themselves.

Who is the antagonist? What are its motives?

The antagonist is a creature with telekinetic powers known as the Demogorgon – it has glowing red eyes and also emits a low, guttural growling sound. It takes children away in the night and feeds on their blood. The creature is never fully seen, kept in the shadows for the most part. There are suggestions through various episodes that there are more like it, and that they come from an alternate dimension called “Upside Down”.
