The Fire Island film is about a group of queer best friends who gather in the Fire Island Pines for their annual week of love and laughter, but when a sudden change of events jeopardizes their summer in gay paradise, their bonds as a chosen family are pushed to the limit. In the first few minutes, we meet our protagonist, Peter, who has just had his heart broken by his long-term partner Kenny. His friends insist that it’s time to take a break from New York City and head out to Fire Island Pines for some much needed rest and relaxation.

What is the plot of the story ?

The story follows the characters at Fire Island as they get together to sort out their feelings towards their lost relationship and towards each other. At one point the group is threatened by a mysterious person who seems to know them very well. The film is told in a non-linear way, with different character perspectives in several scenes and with monologues interspersed throughout every single day of the film. The stories that we discover about our friends through these monologues help us understand them better and bring us closer to them over time. In a way, we are seeing ourselves through the eyes of these characters, understanding our relationships with others by imagining ourselves in those same situations.

Who is in the cast ? What role did each character portray ?

The cast include Joel Kim Booster , Conrad Ricamora , Ellen Wong , Daniel Franzese , Hayley Kiyoko , Angelica Ross with Derek Klena and Dylan Gelula . Peter is an out gay man who has just been broken up with by his longterm boyfriend. He has a high-pressure job at a leading fashion magazine, but he is secretly unhappy.  Peter also struggles to learn how to move on from his breakup. Paulie is the hot mess of the group, a former teen idol turned escort who falls in and out of love easily. He craves affection, but doesn’t really know how to give it himself.

What are the challenges they face ?

Peter is struggling with his breakup and worries about moving on. He’s learned what he wants in a partner, but there’s no one in his life who makes him feel like that now. He feels like he needs to start over, but he isn’t sure how. Paulie is unable to fall in love and has built up a wall around himself. Moving on from the past is hard enough without having an emptiness inside, too. Tom and Matt are both confused by their feelings towards each other after they had sex while on ecstasy at the beach party. Although Tom’s heart races when he hears Matt’s name being called out during the game of truth or dare by another guy, he doesn’t want to admit it to himself.

Who is the antagonist ? What are its motives ?

The antagonist is a mysterious person who is also staying at the Pines. When Paulie gets a text from this person later in the film, he finds out that they know everything about our friends: their names, their ages, what they like and don’t like — even things they have not told anyone else. It seems this person has been keeping an eye on them for years. Most of the friends assume this person is keeping tabs on them because they are a member of the Sand Castle, a group of neighbors who use social media to comment on and judge other people’s lives.

What are the epic scenes ?

The first time we see the group of friends together they are at a beach party, dancing and having fun. When Tom sees Matt looking very sad, he asks him what’s wrong. Matt says it’s just hard to go back after a breakup, and Tom takes his hand in his to comfort him. At this moment there is an epic scene where the audience realizes that their relationship will play a big part in the story, but in a way that no one expected. The resolution comes towards the end of the film, when Peter is asked to be honest about his feelings for someone who has seemingly been out of his life for some time now.

Would you recommend watching this ?

Yes. It’s a great film with a good storyline, amazing actors and an unusual way of showing it. We understand the viewer’s point of view by seeing things through the characters’ perspectives (their thoughts, feelings, emotions). The film is non-linear with one epic scene after another, but it is not confusing at all. It has something for everyone: humor, friendship and love . Thanks for reading !
