What are the themes?

The themes of Batman are justice, hope, and fear. Batman is a symbol of justice and hope for the people of Gotham City. He represents what they can be if they stand up to corruption and work together. Fear is also a major theme. Many of the villains are based on people’s fears, such as Scarecrow (fear of fear itself), Joker (fear of the unpredictable), and Two-Face (fear of making the wrong choice). The climax of The Batman is typically when Batman finally defeats the villain. However, there is also often a subplot that comes to a head at the same time. For example, in “Batman: The Animated Series”, the episode “Heart of Ice” not only has Batman defeating Mr. Freeze but also resolving his feelings for Batgirl.

The most common antagonist is Batman’s archenemy, the Joker. The Joker’s motives are usually to create chaos and destruction, simply for the sake of it. He represents the complete opposite of everything that Batman stands for. Other villains include Two-Face, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, and Poison Ivy. These villains have different motives, but they all share one common goal: to defeat Batman.
