Netflix’s Q-Force Season 1 Review: Is It Worth Watching?

For those who aren’t aware, getting Smart is a wonderful way to get yourself caught. Archer has spent the previous 12 years demonstrating how a spy comedy should be made, at least for those who aren’t familiar with getting Smart. You ridicule the agency, its rivalry, and bureaucracy, as well as the agents’ incompetence or their messy personal lives. Q-Force is a comedic spy spoof that features a queer cast (most of them). Is it amusing, though? Here’s a detailed review of the Q-Force:

Cadet Steve Maryweather is setting a course record at the Academy for the American Intelligence Agency, and he’s doing it as part of an exercise. After Steve realized how to use the technique, he volunteered as a guinea pig for his mentor, V, who was ecstatic.

While many of Steve’s classmates rejoice during an outdoor graduation party, who trained him, he is uncharacteristically quiet. During his graduation ceremony, though, Steve comes out as gay.

Steve is immediately stripped of his valedictorian status and replaced with lunkish cadet Rick Buck, according to Dick Chunley, for whom the term “homophobic” appears to be pejorative. He then sends Steve to West Hollywood, California, to launch a new department there.

Steve has been waiting ten years for his first case. Apart from being tortured by Rick, who refers to him as “Agent Mary,” he runs an Airbnb out of his home, which currently has two German tourists who are comfortable going about naked.

Steve has cobbled together a fantastic group of specialists, all of whom work from his garage: Deb, a tech whiz with a background in espionage who converted a Subaru Outback into a superbly sneaky vehicle; Twink, an expert in drag disguise; and Stat, the world’s leading hacker. After V has called in, Steve asks for a case; V replies that he must wait since he is the only woman with any authority within the AIA.

Steve decides they should go rogue and solve a case on their own. During one of Twink’s drag performances, he encountered someone he thought was a terrorist, so they use the “Grindo” app to track him down. Meanwhile, Chunley sends V out to prevent the “Q-Force” group from completing a task, despite his protestations.

When they do get that case open, V puts herself on the line with Chunley to create a Q-Force official. There is one condition, however: Rick is added to the team “to keep an eye” on them.

What Is Our Take?

Gabe Liedman, with Hayes and Mike Schur among the executive producers, established Q-Force.

It’s the first spy comedy in which the entire team is made up of members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and their special talents aid them in criminal investigations. The first episode disappointed us because it relied too heavily on preconceptions and lowbrow sexual humor.

It’s as though this show would have seemed cutting-edge and revolutionary in 2003 on FX or another network like it. However, LGBTQIA+ characters have broken away from many of the preconceptions presented in this pilot.

Do we need Steve to say “Bye!” as he shoots opponents in his training scenario? Do we require Twink to inform us that he doesn’t have to sleep with the coroner anymore so he can get free hair for his wigs? Even the jokes regarding Deb modifying a Subaru feel stale.

Metcalf, who is also excellent as V, is an unbalanced comedy spy boss. However, Cole’s acting as Chunley is fantastic, and the things he states are so over-the-top homophobic that it moves from comedy to something far more dangerous.

If the show was made in the early 2000s, it might have served as a method of illustrating how keeping Steve and his team down is only a short distance from extinguishing people’s worries about him. In 2021, Chunley will likely just appear like someone who should have been sued for harassment years ago.

We’re looking forward to seeing how the characters develop beyond what we witnessed in the first episode, and with Schur on board as a producer, we have faith that these people will be given depth.
