Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9 and Elysium, has just updated fans about his latest project: the sequel to District 9. Neill’s new film will be a direct follow-up to his first one; it is set 10 years after its predecessor. The original film was released in 2009 and follows an alien race called “prawns” who are forced to live in slum conditions on Earth while humans exploit their bodies for labor and other purposes.
About the Movie “District 9”
District 09 is a 2009 science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp. It tells the story of an alien race forced to live in slum conditions on Earth; while humans exploit their bodies; for labor and other purposes. The title refers to District Nine, which serves as headquarters; for the aliens who are relocated there from various countries; following an invasion that has left earth uninhabitable; for them.
In 2010, Neill won Best Director at Screamfest Horror Film Festival; for this movie and went on to win the best director at Sitges – Catalan International Film Festival in 2011. He also won Saturn Award from the Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy & Horror Films (ASFFHF) in 2013 within the category “Best Director.”
“District 9” Sequel Renewal Status
Neill Blomkamp is currently working on a new movie, “Chappie,” but he also said that there would be room for District Nine. The director filmed the first film in both Johannesburg and Toronto for $30 million with an estimated budget of $200 to 250 million. Neill has tweeted about this sequel saying it’s not going to happen soon. He went into detail about the plot by giving us more information stating that it’s set ten years after Part One (2009), where we left off when Wikus van der Merwe had been beaten up, and his brain was removed from his body so as not to turn him back into an alien.
“District 10” Release Date Predictions
Neill has not even started writing the District Nine sequel, but he believes that it will be made eventually.
He says that there are a lot of stories left; to tell in this world and many more characters to explore, especially with Wikus van de Merwe’s transformation; into one of these aliens; at the end of Part One. Neill also mentioned how he would like to explore what happened; when other countries found out about these alien creatures, who had been living on earth for decades, and some kind of military response was created.
So, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that there is no release date for this project.
Potential Storyline for the new project
Blomkamp said that the potential storyline for the District Nine sequel is still up in the air. He mentioned how he has a lot of ideas and had previously discussed with Neill about sequels, but now he just wants to take some time away from it all.
I have a lot of ideas, and Neill and I had previously discussed sequels, but now I just want to take some time away from it all.
The truth is that the whole thing was so depressing for me that I need to go make something more upbeat!
It’s not like Neill needs any help…everything he does turns out brilliant anyways. We’ll always be friends no matter what happens with District Nine.
