“Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror” On Shudder – Everything We Know So Far!

Horror Noire is a new original horror anthology series premiering on the Shudder streaming service. Horror films have always been an important part of African American culture, and Horror Noire brings together both well-known directors and newcomers to tell stories about race, gender identity, class, sexuality, and more.

It will premiere in October with six different episodes from some of the genre’s most notable filmmakers including Jordan Peele (director/writer), Spike Lee (director), Jada Pinkett Smith (actor), and many more! The horror genre has had a long history in film dating back to its roots in silent cinema.

In Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror – a six-part documentary that examines key moments of racism throughout history that have to lead to the creation of stereotypes and tropes in horror films – each episode will explore one decade from the 1900s through 2020s.

“The true face of America was revealed in the Horror Noire series,” said director Jesse Moss (Hip-Hop Evolution). “Horror films were instrumental in shaping our understanding of race relations, but also how we think about violence and fear.”

Each episode is focused on exploring a different decade beginning with the early 1900s. Horror movies from the 1950s and ’60s, which often portrayed black characters as dangerous predators or victims of brutal savagery. In the 1990s, horror films became about confronting racism while also using their power to expose social hypocrisies.
