Jean Smart Revealed that she got Watchmen Role because Sigourney Weaver Declines
It was announced last week that actress Jean Smart had been cast as the mother of The Comedian in Watchmen. What most people don’t know is that Sigourney Weaver originally had the role but turned it down due to “scheduling conflicts.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smart revealed that she got this role because Weaver decided to turn it down.
Jean Smart Revealed what?
The role of The Comedian’s mother in Watchmen is a supporting one. In the movie, she will be seen at his funeral and then have brief appearances until her son Silk Spectre II has to bring their daughter Laurie (aka Silk Spectre III) back home from school. When asked what it was like wearing all those period outfits that were so detailed, Smart said, “It’s an honor. I’m not usually hired for my expertise with historical films.”
She goes on to talk about how nervous she was when filming the scene where Rorschach comes through her window looking for clues- which ended up being cut out of the film because they couldn’t get clearance for copyrighted material – but also talks about feeling connected to this character.
Smart also said she was a fan of the movie but that there were things in its script that didn’t suit her and assumed Sigourney Weaver felt much the same way because they both declined to appear in this film, only for Smart to take on the role afterward.
“The things that appealed to me about the film were very different from what maybe it was for Sigourney,” Smart said. “And I felt like she and myself had been, you know, we had both done our duty with this piece of material.”
Smart also talks about meeting with Zack Snyder in New York City before shooting began on the project, saying he didn’t offer any particular advice but instead just reassured her she would be doing a good job as Nite Owl’s (Patrick Wilson) partner since she is one of his childhood heroes.
She finishes by talking about how much fun she had playing these characters because they’re so different than anything else she has played- which helped offset some of the challenges, such as wearing costumes.
