What’s the Plot:

The show will follow three generations living under one roof in a contemporary and diverse depiction of what life looks like today for a young Cuban-American family exploring issues that are never too far from the surface. Elena Alvarez has given up her career at the district attorney’s office to work full time with raising her two children, 13-year-old Alex, who has just been diagnosed with autism, and 16-year-old daughter Penelope (nicknamed PENNY) while trying to maintain an active role in their lives both emotionally and practically – setting rules together when she can’t be there, advocating for them when she can’t be their voice.

Synopsis:

The series stars the critically-acclaimed America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) as Elena Villa; Gabrielle Ruiz (Broadway’s Hamilton and In-Transit) as Penelope; Justin Bartha (“The Hangover”) as Alex, her husband; Dawn Olivieri (Orange is The New Black) as Vanessa Diaz, their wealthy next-door neighbor who moves into the neighborhood with her daughter DeeDee after splitting from an unfaithful spouse during his election campaign for mayor of Los Angeles.

Lauren Ash (Superstore), Sarayu Blue ((Atypical)), and newcomer Isabella Gomez also star. Guest-starring in the pilot are Tony Plana (Ugly Betty) as Elena’s father, J.P.; Cuban-American actor Marcel Ruiz and Colombian actress Francisca Valenzuela as Penelope’s parents; Mexican TV host Lili Estefan; Golden Globe winner America Ferrera’s older brother Gabriel Chavarria from East Los High and Genie Award Winner Sherene Azmeh.
