“Gossip Girl” actor Leighton Meester is set to star in Netflix twisty thriller “The Weekend Away,” an adaptation of the novel Sarah Alderson.

The psychological thriller takes place amid a weekend gateway to Croatia that awry when a woman is accused of killing her best friend. As she attempts to clear her name and uncover the truth, her efforts unearth a painful secret.

Along with Meester, the cast includes “Batwoman” actor Christina Wolfe, Ziad Bakri, and Luke Norris. Alderson is adapting the screenplay with Kim Farrant set to direct.

Alderson as a prolific writer, has published more than 20 books. The best-selling novels being, “Hunting Lila,” “Losing Lila,” and many more.

The novel has been translated into more than 20 languages. Alderson’s book “Losing Lila” was adapted for the screen in 2006 under the name of The Sisterhood. She is also well-known as a prolific blogger and speaker on mental health issues. Includes dissociation disorder told her own story publicly for the first time back in 2011.

Synopsis

The Weekend Away is the latest psychological thriller from New Zealand-based author and screenwriter Sarah Alderson. The story centers on a mother who has been having recurring nightmares of her daughter being abducted by an unknown man with long dark hair — these dreams come as she’s trying to restore their relationship after it was strained when she gave birth to a baby girl. The daughter doesn’t seem too interested in the new sister. She is much younger than she was expecting — and there are some other family dynamics that don’t sit well with her either.

“The Weekend Away” marks Meester’s first film role in some time. Her recent feature credits include in 2019 the crime drama “Semper-Fi.” On the small screen, she appeared in the sitcom “Single Parents” with Taran Killam.

It will be available in all territories where the streaming service is offered, including Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, India (English), South Korea (Korean), and Japan (Japanese).

In Theaters: The Weekend Away will be released theatrically during 2021 to near-universal acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 97% approval rating with Critics Consensus reading “A chilling psychological thriller that builds tension as effectively as it delivers satisfying shocks.”

Music Details: Composists Andrew Lockington’s atmospheric score for this psychological thriller features sound design by Daniel Beaux and was recorded at the Sony Scoring Stage in Los Angeles.

Running Time: The Weekend Away will be approximately 110 minutes long, including credits, with a running time for directors’ commentary of 20 minutes total plus trailers included on the Blu-ray/Digital releases.
