Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss recently announced that season 4 filming has resumed, and a fifth season is on the horizon. The release date for season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale has not been revealed, but episodes from the fourth season aired in April 2021. This may indicate that a 2022 release is possible.

Hulu just officially renewed The Handmaid’s Tale for a fifth season which will also bring back Elisabeth Moss, Alexis Bledel, Joseph Fiennes, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, and Bradley Whitford. The caption read, “The cast has a special message for you  – Season 4 returns in 2021, and we’re excited to announce that we’ve been renewed for two more seasons!#HandmaidsTale.”

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Plot Synopsis:

The fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale will follow the events in season four. At the end of the third season, June (Moss) strategized an overthrow of Gilead, transporting dozens of children to Canada and starting an all-out war in consequence.

In February, Damon Miller admitted on a panel for the Television Critics Association that he does not see an end to his show The Handmaid’s Tale. “As long as Lizzie will do this with me, I’ll keep going,” he joked after admitting there was yet to be a clear ending in sight. “There’s a lot of life in this story.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5, for which the second episode was released Wednesday, touched on current issues in American society. “People are talking about whether they’re going to be desensitized from a TV show,” Nevins told Variety. “I’m not convinced we know yet. It’s a bigger question than I think anybody has answered so far.”

Will The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Be Final Season?

When Miller told The Hollywood Reporter season 5 would be the next chapter of “The Handmaid’s Tale”, he conceded that his view had changed before 2020. He starting to think it might be a good time for us as an audience, thematically and story-wise.

He added, “So I know where I am in the story and am aware of this big pivot point as well. Whether it’s the end or not, I don’t know – it just feels like it’s a good time to reassess.”
